Webinar & Research Project: Law Reform for Unlocking Urban Township Economies

As part of a team assembled by the NRF SARChI Chair in Cities, Law and Environmental Sustainability (CLES) at NWU Potchefstroom, I have spent a number of months producing commissioned research for the South African Cities Network and the Gauteng Provincial Government, on the legal landscape pertaining to the regulation of township economies in South African cities. The aim of the research is to identify existing legal instruments (at national, provincial and local levels) that respectively hinder or have the potential to enable township economic development, and to consider the appropriate level of, and form for, further enabling legal intervention. On 1 April 2020, the SACN hosted a webinar during which we presented our completed review and assessment of national and provincial instruments, as well as our draft work on local government bylaws. It was my first time participating in a webinar, and I had fun interacting with stakeholders as well as a broader audience.
