I am privileged to have been selected as one of the cohort of 2022/23 research fellows at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Amsterdam, where I am based during my sabbatical from the University of the Witwatersrand from 5 September 2022 until 28 January 2023. During my time at NIAS I will be working on a project entitled “human rights in the African city”, for which I contemplate the place of African cities, and the African regional human rights system, in the global-north-dominated “human rights city” movement. My fellowship is enabled by the support not only of NIAS but also of the South African National Research Foundation‘s incentive grant for rated researchers as well as an international sabbatical support grant from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust. I am incredibly excited to be in Amsterdam and to begin to immerse myself in this multi-disciplinary, research-focused environment.
